After the Meiji Restoration, it had been left neglected. In the early Meiji era, it underwent maintenance after purchased by Iwasaki Yataro, the founder of Mitsubishi financial conglomerate. It avoided the damage from the subsequent Great Kanto Earthquake, and in 1938, it was donated to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and opened to the public. During the Pacific War that followed, Rikugien escaped the damage from the Tokyo air raids, thus preserving its original appearance from the time of its landscaping. Rikugien, which survived to the present day, has been designated as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty (Special Historic Site and Natural Monument).
