Kawagoe, A Livable Town with Traditional Charm

2023/10/13

Neighborhood Information

Located in southwestern Saitama Prefecture, Kawagoe, often referred to as “Little Edo,” is a captivating town where historical charm harmonizes with modern comfort. Once a flourishing castle town closely connected to Edo (now Tokyo), the area features rows of traditional kurazukuri (warehouse-style) buildings, along with shrines and temples. The town is also known for its vibrant festivals, most notably the Kawagoe Festival, which is one of the most famous in Japan and celebrates regional prosperity and safety. Kawagoe continues to attract numerous tourists and is also a popular residential area due to its excellent access to central Tokyo.

Historical Streetscapes Reminiscent of Edo

Kawagoe’s greatest appeal lies in its historical scenery. The Kurazukuri Street, lined with majestic merchant houses, gives visitors the feeling of stepping back into the Edo period.

One iconic landmark is the Toki no Kane (Time Bell Tower), which still chimes four times daily with the same nostalgic sound, offering a calming experience for visitors.

Kawagoe is also renowned for its abundance of shrines and temples. Kita-in Temple, deeply associated with Tokugawa Ieyasu, houses guest halls and drawing rooms relocated from Edo Castle and features a notable collection of 500 Rakan statues. Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine, famous as a matchmaking shrine, hosts the popular “Enmusubi Fuurin” summer wind chime festival, where colorful Edo-style wind chimes fill the grounds. The grand Kawagoe Festival, held every October, features magnificent parade floats and is designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan.

Another must-see spot is the Former Yamazaki Residence, built by the renowned Meiji-era confectioner Yamazaki family. The residence is known for its blend of Japanese and Western architecture, seasonal gardens, and a stunning stained-glass window adorned with a phoenix. Both the house and garden are nationally designated cultural properties.
